WHO AM I?
Our primary sense of identity influences how we respond to present and upcoming national and global events, some potentially frightening.
As an American Christian whose primary citizenship, identity and loyalty are in the Kingdom of God, I find myself observing our world’s chaos at somewhat of a distance because, while it can impact my body, it has no power over my soul (mind, will and emotions) or my spirit unless I give it that power.
The Kingdom of God is the spirit realm where God’s rule sets the culture and mission of its citizens. It is entered by choice, and it functions right in the midst of Satan’s spirit realm which otherwise governs mankind by default because of original sin. The two spirit kingdoms are as different as day and night in every way, yet because of Satan’s deception the differences go unrecognized by many Christians.
They are like immigrants whose identity and loyalty are more in the country they left than the one they came into even though they took the oath of citizenship. This is problematic, especially when there is conflict between the two nations – and there is always conflict between the two spirit kingdoms.
Our primary sense of citizenship, identity and loyalty will determine where we reach for help in troubled times, which determines the outcome and its eternal consequences. Psalm 18:1-2 offers a good option!

And so, for us American Christians in our world of advanced technology with its benefits and vulnerabilities; in our land of opportunity but with ever-widening divisions in the moral and political arenas; in the context of the increasingly obvious (for those who have eyes to see) demonstrations of the powers of the two opposing spirit kingdoms – it is more important than ever that we know who we are.
I am not being negative, I am declaring hope and safety in the face of the present and soon-coming dark realities of our world, but for much of the Church today it will require II Chronicles 7:14 repentance because of the measure to which we now find identity in, and express loyalty to, the wrong spirit kingdom.
Let’s remember Jesus’ comforting words, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
