The almost-stupidest thing I can imagine is that one would live in a way that tries to get the best of both worlds. That is, indulging in the pleasures of this world but expecting to go to heaven when we die. Forgive me, but there seems to be a lot of churchgoing folks in that camp, thus our inability to be salt and light to our nation – thus her morale collapse.
First of all, trying to satisfy our soul-hunger in anything (or everything) this world offers can’t work. It’s an effort in futility, as we say, because God made it so. He made man in a way that our wholeness can only come through spirit-to-Spirit communion with Him, but because we have free-will we can choose to believe Satan’s lies. Doesn’t that define “stupid”?!
Secondly, if we believe Jesus meant what He said in Revelation 3:15-16 we will fear to live that way because of its eternal consequences. “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” NIV
And let’s consider Matthew 7:13-14 and Matthew 7:21-23 as we ponder our choices in life.
The truth is, that Jesus offers the John 10:10 Abundant Life that He purchased for us with his blood, to all. It is a life of safety and security in the Kingdom of God regardless of what happens in this world – even if the stars should fall. It is the fully satisfying, overflowing life that we were made for but it only comes when we do things His way. We must make a life-altering decision to believe in Him; humbly come to Him; repent of our pride in thinking we know a better way; and “receive” His gift of Abundant Life.
Let’s choose wisdom over stupidity, and let’s help each other on the journey.
